Buying my first business suit, question on fit?

Hi everyone,

I’m shopping for my first suit (about to finish college) and need some advice.

I’ve been to several places, anywhere from JcPenny to the Mens Warehouse and the one thing i’ve noticed is that the jackets they give me always seem to fit oddly on my shoulders (like they stick out past my shoulders) the guy at Mens warehouse said that there is nothing i can do about it because I am an “Athletic fit” and because i have a big chest / narrow mid section that suits jackets are never going to fit me just right.

They have been fitting me in a 44R, it fits ok in the chest… to big in the shoulders and to big in the mid-sections. I tried to go to a smaller size but it seemed to be pretty tight across the back when i fold my arms.

If i went with a 42, it would fit much better in the shoulders, but i’m not sure how tight “its supposed to be” across the back.

What do you guys think?
Where is it more important for it to fit right…? Is it better to have the shoulders look right but for it to be a little tight when i cross my arms, or for it to look boxy but be more accommodating to movement?

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments anyone could offer.

Why don’t you go to the store and choose the most comfortable.. Ruehl, RG

I would go with the suit that fits in the shoulders and have the rest of the suit tailored to you. It’ll cost more, but if it gets you the job then it was well worth it IMO. Logan H
