I want to start a business soon so I have a question to ask here. I have heard of ways to protect personal assets from being taken in a law suit. What are real legal ways to protect personal assets?

Im a promoter and Im starting a promoting business booking bands in Florida. I created a resume and cover letter so I approach the owners of the club and try to book some bands for them. At least i want to look professional. I dont feel I should spend any money yet on professional business cards until I can at least get my first gig booking a band. What do u think?
I can get the free cheapo business cards at vistaprint.com…but that will downplay me. The backside of the card says “free cards at vista.com” Business owners will lose respect for me when they see that.
I think its best to walk into the club with an expensive suit and a cover letter and resume FIRST. If my business fails..then i have no money invested. Or should I get the free cheapo cards anyway and spend 7 bucks in shipping? I dont want to look cheap.

My friend is a small business owner, and recently, he involved in a small case law suit, since his business is so slow, he (or his business) can not afford to pay for the penalty (more than $5k), before the final of the court decision (he think he will lost), he want to close the business.
The question is, will he take the responsibility for the case even after close the business, will that lawsuit hold the liability for his own personal asset.

I want to open my own appraisal business. For the first few years I will be working alone. I will be paid as an independent contractor from banks and insurance companies.

I want to protect my personal assets from suit and I absolutely want to pay the cheapest amount in taxes.

What is the best type of business to open? From what Ive gathered it appears that an LLC, S Corp and C Corp are the most appropriate choices, but Im not sure as to why.

What are the pros and cons of each?

I have a great idea for a small business that I think will be a huge success in my small community. But my personal credit is totally wrecked, so I don’t think I’d qualify for any sort of financing. I’m not real sure how to get a grant. I read the book of the hyper guy in the crazy suit off tv who says he can help you get a grant for almost everything. It was a waste of time because it made no sense to me. Any suggestions?

I bought a ‘Mr Site’ package but I’ve ultimately found that it doesn’t suit my needs, doesn’t display properly in Internet Explorer, and is difficult to use. I would rather pay someone to do it for me – but as a brand new business I can’t afford to pay much.
Does anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions?
