How can I get rid of arm pit smell on my business suits when dry cleaning doesn’t work?

Question asked:

I take my business suits to the dry cleaners regularly and they get it clean except the arm pit smell never goes away even after I ask them to please try to clean the armpit area as much as possible. I don’t sweat that much, but because I wear suits about 12 hours a day at work, it makes it stinky over time. What is the most effective way for me to get rid of the smell?

Below is an answer from a professional dry cleaner. Leave the baking soda on the armpit until you are ready to take it to the cleaners.

Odors – Your professional dry cleaner can remove most odors in the normal process of dry cleaning. For washable garments, most odors should be removed by normal laundering. For stubborn odors sprinkle the clothes with baking soda, let stand, and then vacuum. Launder. mrsdeli

    1. I suggest that you buy some underarm protectors (see site below) that attach to the suit or whatever, so that there will be a guard from the odor.
    2. Go to a different DRY Cleaner.
    3. You can try spraying fabreeze on the underarm part of the suit the night before. Or spray and put in the dryer – cool setting.
    4. If the fabric is synthetic, then try to find cotton based suit jackets or at least cotton shirts under the suits.
    5. Try a new deodorant that lasts longer or take deodorant to work with you and reapply after a quick wipe with those cloths from cottonelle. ms_m_monroe

Simple Green works well and also Lysol. Mitch D

Try putting a little ammonia on the shirt where it’s stinky, let it set for about 10 mins then wash normally and use fabric softener. *Chantal+Rob*6.14.08*

You could try the methods that the other people have suggested to remove the BO on the suits but the real answer is to prevent it happening. If it’s in the suits it’s going to be in your shirts and vests (if you wear them), too. You need to wash your armpits with hot water and soap every morning (preferably shower or bath), then apply a good deodorant/antiperspirant. You need to wear a clean shirt every day. If you notice it, I’m surprised that your colleagues haven’t mentioned it. How often do you get your suits cleaned? You should never wear one for longer than a week. Also, if you go out in the evening, it would be a good idea to wash, reapply the antiperspirant and change your shirt before you go out. Another body part that can get smelly is feet; daily washing and clean socks are necessary, too. Joan S

You should wear protective underarm shields, under your dress shirts of sweaters. They can be washed thoroughly every night and re-applied to your garments in the morning. Try wearing an underarm deodorant with baking soda in it – this could cut down the odour.
Sprinkle baby powder on the underarms of your jackets and then brush it off before you send your suits out to be cleaned. baremp
