how do you wash a wool clothing item with fur trimming at home, without having to go to a dry clean service?
i bought a vintage business suit a while ago for $5. it’s a beautiful one made of pure wool with real fur trimming on its collar. the only thing is that i haven’t washed it since i bought it, and now i’m pretty sure it needs some washing, but i don’t have that much money that i could spend on dry-cleaning. plus, it’d be way more expensive than the cost of the suit itself. what do you thing i should do?

Check in your local department store or a good grocery store: You should be able to find a home dry-cleaning kit. I used one of those on one of my husband’s suits, and it does work very well indeed.
Good luck! Tigger
Yes, that’s why I never buy anything that needs drycleaning; it’s more like renting clothes than buying them, but then I don’t need or want to wear suits. If it’s possible to take off the fur, maybe that’s your best option if you clean it at home. Perhaps you could make it so the fur is held on with snap fasteners to avoid this problem in the future. I think drycleaning is your only real option for keeping the suit in good shape. Drycleaners know how to block things so they keep their shape, and have ways of pressing things so they don’t pick up ironing marks. If you’re a neat and tidy person, not one who always manages to spill food or something on your clothes like me, perhaps one of those Dryel home ‘drycleaning’ kits would work for freshening up, and just get it drycleaned once in a while. Carefully read the directions in the Dryel kit to be sure it will work for this suit. If you must wash it at home, treat it like very fine wool, pay particular attention to how you treat it as it dries, and learn how to press clothing as opposed to ironing it. If you can’t find instructions for that on the net, e-mail me and I’ll send them from an old book I have. When you see how much trouble it is, drycleaning might look like the better option. Karen L
