  1. Mona Lisa Overdrive says:

“Formal” means tuxedo, either black tie or white tie.

“Black tie is a dress code for formal evening events, and is worn to many types of social functions … Briefly, men wear a dinner jacket (tuxedo coat); trousers, uncuffed, with one stripe on leg seams; shirt (stiff wing or soft folded collar) with either a placketed, pleated, piqué, or ruffled front; a black bow tie; a black evening waistcoat or a cummerbund; black, patent leather or calf Oxfords or court shoes; cuff links and shirt studs; accessories” Mona Lisa Overdrive

Ask the host what the dress will be. If they say “black tie” then you need a tuxedo (with a black tie of course). White tie would be the most formal evening wear. A nice business suit is fine if they say that it will not be black tie.

If you are a lady attending such an event, then a nice dressy dress if it’s just business suits, a lovely full length evening gown if it’s black tie and a ball gown if it’s white tie.

Technically formal means black tie or white tie, but not everyone knows the rules anymore, so we have to confirm. Aporia

It will depend on your gender. Tuxedos (or extremely nice suits) for men, evening gowns for women. If you are a woman, business suits tend to be frowned upon.

It will really depend on the occasion. Weddings you would want to wear a tux, but if it has something to do with your company, a nice business suit would be acceptable. mandalore16

I agree with everyone else. Formal does mean Tuxedo. Just for reference a business suit at a party is semi-formal. Most people do not specify black or white tie unless it is political, they just say formal. Personally, I think every man should own a tuxedo just for these occasions. Ron John

Even though it says “formal” it is a business affair and not a formal wedding, etc so I believe a dark suit would be proper with a solid or very small print tie. I think people use the word formal now because otherwise some people would show up in shorts, flip flops & mini skirts & tank tops. But you have to check with others first to be sure. Try & ask his secretary or personal assistant to make sure it doesn’t say “black-tie” which definitely means a tux.

Have a great time & relax & enjoy. msnoose
