Teen Business Casual?

I’m an 18 year old Teenager, I got a job as an administrative assistant for a newer company. The problem is that I have to wear business casual clothing. How can I wear that but also dress MY AGE?! Are dresses allowed?! I’m not one for the blazer things, not really my style it just seems like it’s more stylish for people a little older for me. Is a business suit necessary?! HELP!!

Dresses certainly do work…like, casual slip in dresses. And then…for younger women…I would suggest pants (darker colors, normally…or pinstripes) and different shirts (bright colors, bold patterns, etc.) And then when it gets boring, you can acessorize.
Lol, I’m DEFINATELY a blazer person. So I can easily pair a blazer up with a pair of dress pants and heels. Do you do the bolero jackets (cropped ones)? They look nice. And skirts slightly below the knee are nice looking as well. lilsedalemami
Business casual means just to dress up a little. You don’t have to wear a business suit, just something like you would wear to church or family dinner. Like, slacks w/ nice top (of your likeing). just not trashy. islandgirl
wear some dressy pants and a quarter sleeve button down. you can find some really nice colors and things now a days so if you look around you can find some. and if you are into jewlery you could find colorful necklaces and bracelsts to brighten up your outfit, just nothing too big and don’t wear like 10 neclaces at a time. you_jule
I believe a conservative maybe black dress could work..But you do see alot of women wearing those suit tops and knee long cotton pencil skirts in the workplace. Its your desicion. Just wear something that is rather conservative, something that doesnt show much leg or any cleavage. Thats the professional look. ARH

blazers are a bit too stiff for an 18 year old
dresses are allowed aslong as they are understated…if i were you i’d buy yourself a cute little cardigan sweater
it’ll allow you to get away with a lot more
if you’re a trouser girl think trousers, if you are a skirt girl do skirts, if you like dresses as long as they aren’t sunday school dresses all is fair
use your judgment! don’t wear jeans
and look at what others are wearing
most of all be CONFIDENT, GRACE AND POISE WILL TAKE YOU FAR IN ANY INDUSTRY

well itz business casual….casual is the key word…u just have to be lightweight dressy….dresses are ok…nice pants…cute shirts/blouses…u might want to rethink the blazer thing…there are some cute ones…as far as for dressin ur age…just get cuter accesories and buy pieces in younger & brighter colors…u can pull it off

I find that cute blouses and nicely cut pants go well, there are a lot of younger women here at my office that look young and look appropriately dressed for work…some cargo chinos, sweaters, neatly cut polo shirts, dresses, boots and skirts…if you do not feel like it is club wear or that you could sleep in it, it’s probably fine…no jeans, no clothes in bad repair, no club wear, no jammie bottoms and I think you’ve got it covered…wear what you wore in the interview or similar and then take cues from what other people are wearing…by the way, there is no shame in asking your direct superior what the dress code is, in a casual way, trust me, administration would rather people ask then show up inappropriately dressed…
One thing I can say is, stear clear of heavy makeup, strong perfumes and body wash, really extreme manicures, club make up (with sparkles) dangling ipod buds, unless you are on lunch or break…
I know, you probably already know this stuff but, these are things I see from folks much older than you and it really burns my toast…and it does affect any measure of professionalism you might otherwise project…

Yes, you can dress your age, but shoot for about 3-4 years ahead. The point of business casual is to avoid the “uptight” constraints of traditional business attire, while not dressing in a way that makes people uncomfortable.
Here’s what’s out:
- visible piercings (besides your ears)
- visible tatoos (including the ones that “peek out”)
- anything with letters/numbers/logo on it
- bare midriff, bare shoulders, bare legs above the knee, plunging necklines
- intentional display of any part of any undergarment
- anything you could wear to the gym
- excessive jewelry
- excessive makeup
So what do you get in return?
- Don’t have to wear stockings
- No need to do the blouse/blazer/skirt thing
- Slacks may be OK
- Comfortable shoes!
Express yourself in your clothing. You’re working now, so shop! Buy nice things that you like and wear them and be yourself. Nobody is trying to turn you into a business-suited robot. Your new coworkers will appreciate you most if you bring your whole person to the workplace, which includes being confident to wear what you like. If you try too hard to “blend in” you will ultimately be frustrated in your work. Trixie
