What is the purpose of wearing a slip under a skirt or dress that is impossible to see through?
I adjusting the zipper of my (already lined) business suit type skirt in the ladies room at the office. The top of my pantyhose had gotten caught in the zipper. A coworker noticed that I wasn’t wearing a slip under it and told me that it was “improper” for a woman not to wear a slip.
All of the skirts I wear are already lined, are made of thick fabric or are really loose and billowy so its impossible to see any trace of my underwear. I’ve always found slips unnecessary, plus the feel of the fabrics they’re usually made of all over my legs REALLY creeps me out for some reason.
She would be really shocked to find out that I hardly ever wear a bra! I’m a size zero and my breasts are almost non-existent. I wear a pair of those little silicone breast cover things and you can’t tell the difference. Plus, I’m a big fan of the cami under a sweater or button up look. The elastic in the cami is more than enough to support what I have! I got into the habit of not wearing one after having surgery to repair a bone defect in my chest. The incision was right on the line of where a bra band usually sits. The doctor told me not to wear one while I was healing because the band could dig into the stitches!

i hate slips and also think they are unecicary. that lady doesnt know what she is talking about. lots of people dont wear slips Tennis ROXS
There is no purpose. Your coworker doesn’t know what he is talking about. m.domonic
She’s just old-fashioned. The thing to consider is what you already have — can anyone see through your skirt? If not, don’t worry about it. equal_opposites
that lady is just dumb. you don’t need to wear a slip. i never do. usually its just to make your skirt flow better and not get caught on your legs with static and such. howhiladidious
Normally worn to feel better against the skin but it does have the other benefit that if you leave you zipper down noone sees your flesh ALAN R
i always thought slips were used to keep your skirt or dress from riding up when you walked or sit down.
she was obviously a rude, old fashioned woman who had no respect. Nicole Y
tell her you’re a grown woman and to mind her own buisness…but to answer your question…there isn’t one me
It’s something that older women thing is required. They think if you’re not wearing more than 3 under garments youre a wh***. lol I dont even wear panty hose- those are ridiculous too. There no use UNLESS like you said you have a really see through yellow or white outfit. Then I completely understand, that does make you look trampy. sunshinedtm4747
there is no point to wearing them. back in the day, material was thinner and could be see through. however, that has been improved for the most part. just ask a friend if they can see through your skirt. if they yes, where a slip. if the answer is no, dont wear one.
it was considered “improper” because the skirt was see through. kittykatdistract
If your skirt is lined there is no need for a slip, i never where one. Jacki
if your skirt is lined or thick enuf to not see thru, ignore her — she’s antiquated
but sometimes even if it’s thick, some materials are uncomfy to have next to your skin (well, next to MY skin anyhow), like wool — it’s scratchy.
many notions like this were once thought ‘improper’ but things change. i don’t know why you’d want to wear a slip unless the skirt is sheer (and they stick to me bum if i get too warm! lol) SweetPandemonium
Your skirts have a slip made into them when it is lined. You do not need a slip that is part of the purpose of including the lining. If you are certain that the material cannot be seen through, check in the light, then there is nothing wrong with not wearing a slip. I bet the woman was of an older generation when such things were far more formalized and the tradition was for women to wear more layers of clothing. It seems that every generation peals off a layer. I have noticed that very few young women wear slips today, even when they really need to wear one. If nothing is seen its OK, that is the purpose of a slip in the first place. CindyLu
Static Cling?? I dunno. My mom always wears slips too. Piper♥
i don’t wear a slip under my skirts either unless they are revealing then i do. so keep doing what your doing its not improper. Rose
I have a few skirts and dresses that don’t require a slip because of visible lines or you can see through it, I wear a slip under them because they may be to clingy. sarah
the purpose of them is hopefully for decency if it suddenly gets very windy.. and a little bit of warmth,
your co-worker probably said it was “improper” because they thought possibly your pantyhose were some form of (”improper”) underwear…
but personally, i think she was just jealous because you can probably get away with wearing a skirt without a (outdated) slip! a random thought
We all get a touch sweaty and don’t notice it, and lose skin cells daily. A slip lets you keep that on the slip, and not the skirt. Easier to wash the slip, than dry clean the skirt.
Find a differnt slip that you like the feel of. Try cotton or silk. Laurence W
Doesn’t sound like you need one. Some people think they feel nice against the skin, but if it creeps you out, skip it. “Proper” is a matter of opinion. Feel free to ignore it. axxessorized
You know my wife explains that she hates seeing a woman get up from a table and has to pull her dress out of her crack

Your coworker is outdated! Slips have become passe and are being phased out by department stores (I looked this past summer and there were maybe a total of 12 slips at Macys, sales ladies didn’t even know where that rack was). Generally, slips were worn to add a layer of protection between skin and sometimes scratchy fabrics, to add a layer of warmth, and to add a layer of opaqueness so no one could see much through the skirt/dress. It no longer seems to matter these days and young women don’t care what is showing, fabrics are way nicer and many items are lined. Your lined skirts sound like that’s plenty. (You can get slips made out of all cotton or silk if you ever need one that doesn’t feel creepy.) I personally always thought a woman in a slip is far more sexy then when only in bras with panties. It used to be that modest, well-brought up, proper ladies always wore hats and gloves too–in fact, twas a time when showing even a glimpse of stocking was improper. Times change. Women are more liberated today and it isn’t improper for a woman to go without a slip, it is a personal decision. Inundated in SF
slips are for those who wear more lacy or lighter dresses and skirts i guess
I wear eather black, blood red, or dark violet things, so I dont see the point in slips either. they are uncomfertable.
