What kind of coat should be worn with a shirt and tie and/or with a suit?

K. asked:

I live in the northeastern U.S. and have my first job that requires business attire (I just finished college). Usually I’ll be wearing a shirt and tie, but also a suit occasionally. What kind of coat is appropriate? The same kind of normal winter coat that’s worn with casual attire? Or something more dressy?

Thanks!

With a shirt and tie or suit it’s best to wear a wool coat or a trench coat over it. A trench coat may be a better option it cheaper (for someone who just finished college) and they often have a removable liner to adapt to different weather conditions, and are somewhat water proof. Mia V
