What kind of suits are acceptable to wear in the business world and why?

Totally depends on the company and industry. What is too formal for one, is not professional enough for another.
When interviewing, the old IBM model is what you should strive for. Navy or Grey Suit, White button up shirt (professionally pressed) red tie (for men). Then after your first interview you can assess the culture. See if the other workers wear sports coats and contrasting pants. See if women wear jackets & pants or only suits.
I’ve worked in all types of environments and trust me, you never know until you are in there and see the other employees.
And a good rule of thumb is always dress for the job you want, not the job you have (or are trying to get). Gem
