What top should I wear under my suit?

Boston Chica asked:

I have my first business meeting with a client tomorrow. I bought a grey pin stripe suit, but I have no idea what kind of a top to wear under it! I tried on a plain white button up blouse under it, but it looked kind of ridiculous and the collar sticks out awkwardly. Any suggestions? I’ve seen women at work just wear tank tops underneath…

Yeah, you should wear a tank top, but a nice, blousey one if you have one. Not too low cut/tight obviously, but a white (or pretty much any color other than grey) tank top would be nice :) edie

You should wear a lacey cami. Maybe a plain white one, or a grey one. They always look really nice and classy, and it would make a good impression.

    Something like this:

If you don’t have a lacey cami, you should just wear a regular one. It would still look nice.

I hope I gave some ideas.. some help haha :) hecsurf93

I would say opt for a color to snaz up your suit a bit. You can have just a hint of color in a nice silk camisole type shirt and that will help to show a bit of your personality to your client as well. Mrs. Mendoza

First off, plain white is too common and old school.

Try a colored shirt(pink, purple, lavender, blue). Bold colors say that you mean business and still say I’m approachable. White is out.

    Good luck!!

P.s. Its winter, no tank tops!!!!! love

One day ain’t a lot for shopping.

If the white blouse’s collar is similar in size and shape to the suit’s collar, try pushing the edges of the blouse collar out above the suit’s, so the blouse collar rests on top of the suit collar. It’s hit or miss, but sometimes you get a neat vintage look. Definitely get a second opinion if you try this.

Otherwise, keep the jacket buttoned up at all times to keep the collar under control, if that’s an option. You can wear a collar-less shirt or tank top underneath (if not white, a solid non-bright color like navy blue), and this is done to avoid collar problems. It’s considered professional, but DO NOT take off your jacket for ANY reason if you do this. Not until you’re well out of sight of the client.

If you wear a pale blouse or shirt, wear a bra that more or less matches your skin color. You might get the job wearing something racy underneath but don’t ever expect to be taken seriously if you pull that stunt. Dragonchild
